Family Portraits Exhibition
As Education Curator for the Portrait Gallery of Canada, Elizabeth Todd Doyle worked closely with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia to develop the workshop program and resulting exhibitions, Family Portraits: Immigration and Identity.
Over the course of several weeks in both Halifax and Ottawa, new Canadian families came together under the direction of an immigrant artist to devise family portraits. They compared photos (when available), figured out what they wanted to show, and how they could show it. They created detailed and heartfelt images. More than that, they contributed their stories of coming to Canada. They shared these stories in their images and through video and audio recordings.
Once installed, both the Portrait Gallery of Canada and AGNS conducted school programs to explore the themes of family and cultural identities.
